J-University Adventures: Writers' Workshop sa GMU times 2 Part 1(US Series)

Last February 2002, a Saturday, i was invited by the guys of George Mason University to go to the Fairfax City campus (ang main campus nila) for a writers' workshop.

I was really surprised to know that, for having staying in a country that is pre-dominantly English-speaking, they'll invite a foreigner like me to go attend a workshop in one of the state of Virginia's most respectable and top most universities.

But even before the actual day had happend, tragedy strucked. It was early during the morning that our phone rang. my sister (who was sleeping at the sofa while Kuya and I are sleeping at the floor and Jorge was lseeping somewhere else in our one-bedroom-one bathroom apartment) answered it and it was a long-distance call from the Philippines.
It was one of our relatives from the Habitan clan, Ate's face looks astonished and seems ike she was deeply shocked.

I can't really tell but the moment that she hanged up the phone, she was crying. Since i was the one who was already awoken from the phone's ringing, she came close to me and told me the bad news. "James.....Patay na si Lolo Peter..... (James, Lolo Peter is gone)". I was shocked bt i cant express how i felt that time. my only reaction was "Ha? Talaga?"

After that i went asleep that night and the next thing i knew, i have to wake up to get myself ready to go to GMU. Mom was away so family friend, Tita Santi came along with Ate Jade to chaperon me on my way to George Mason.

Around 8 in the morning, we went out, bringing along with me a letter i received from the university. Out from the apartment complex of the Villages and the Paviloin, went straight ahead to the West Falls Church/UVA-GMU Metro train station. We took the the ride going to the end of the Virginia orange line which is the METRO station of Vienna-Fairfax/GMU. It is called as such since the place is within the jurisdiction of the City of Fairfax and it is a few kilometers away from neighboring Vienna (the Virginia town and not the Austrian capital).

Outside, there's a nearby bus stop of the Metro Bus with a  complete listing of its scheduled stops (how come Manila doesnt have this things). Unlike the polluted and oldie second-hand buses we have here in Manila, the Metro buses are small yet very comfortable vehicles. There is order, it doesnt stop whenever it wants or whenever the passngers want. It follows the code of bus ethics, it never full itself up and the drivers there are actually friendly.

Anyway, since the trip is unpredictable long, we have top stand by if ever the bus we're riding on will stop at the nearest GMU bus stop.

And it did. at around 9.30 am, we went around inside the GMu campus and was amazed at how it loks like. Maybe, excluding UP Manila, it is my first time being inside a university, or better yet, an American University.

We were able to find my building and i was now attending the workshop. While undergoing the workshop, i happend to bump into one of my classmates in 5th grade. He's a Spaniard named Gonzalo Ortiz-Cacha and his dad works in the World Bank which where my mom was snet to work for two years.

As i was saying back in the whole writer's workshop thingy, the coordinator had us let in on all things about famous literary works through sets of activities. one particular activity i still recall is that the oordinator made us be like the writer of the Sir Sherlock Holmes book series, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. She wants us to create a sotry based on he set of pictures she had for us to see.

Of course, i had one of my most embarrassing moments there. In one activity, the coordinator played some really sad music and she encouraged us to think hard to make a story with a tragic theme. I wnet beyond what was upposed to do and unconciously made a drawing of myself during the time the bad news strucked us earlier that day. the coordinator was dissapppointed and had me do it all over again. i wish it wouldnt be happen again.

Now that the workshop was over, i had more time to look around GMU. the university was named aftrt one of the Founding Fathers of the American Revolution. it was really big so we didnt really have time to explore the whole campus.

Now that we still had more hours of daylight left, we tok tthe oppurtunity to go eat lunch on a fairfax resto. I saw a Chuckie Cheese Amusement park and restaurant nearby but we didnt have that much money so we settled on dining out on a Turkish restaurant which was being run (and i hope it still is) by Turks from Turkey.
and because i was very much overwhelmed but my GMU experience, i was able to recognized the place.

And i was able to put thatin good use when, in a very unexpected delivery, i received from the mailbox that i was invited again to attend another writers' workshop once again in GMU. ill be telling you all of it on part two of J-University Adventures: Writers' Workshop sa GMU times 2 (US Series)

J-University Adventures: CUA All The Way! (US Series)

And you guys thought I'll be posting all about my experiences on the colleges and universities I've visited for my application purposes. You are so dead wrong. I'll be bringing you now from here to overseas now that I'll be sharing you my wonderful experience on two of the top universities in the United States where I actually wet there. For a while, I'll be momentarily not tell about my adventures in USTE and DLSU.

Back in the Spring of 2002, my mom went back to the Philippines to attend to my grandfather's funeral (which we the 4 Habitan siblings are unable to attend due to the circumstances) and left us in our apartment in the care of a Filipina friend of my mom's co-worker in the World Bank (who is also a Filipina). She was very nice to us and was able to bear our behavior.

One time, we went into this place where our caretaker had many friends. She thought it'll be a good experience for us to visit this place. Jorge and Kuya didn't bother to come with us so it was only me, Ate Jade, and the caretaker. We took a subway near our place (West Falls Church Station, Orange Line from Vienna/Fairfax/GMU to New Carrolton, MD) and arrived at the Judiciary Square Station (I can't exactly recall the exact station but CUA is located in Michigan Avenue). We went inside the campus and was verty much surprised on what it exactly looks ike.

thye campus is very large with a lot a greenery and stone buildings. Of course, there's this big church (one of the largest churches in the DC area) with a dome which looks like a synagogue dome because of the way it was painted, it is The National Basilica of the Immaculate Concepcion. there was also a nearby convent/monastery where we encountered nuns in one of their prayer sessions.

Since the place is pretty huge, it didn't really took us long to have our feet get tired. So we went into this place insde the campus where there was a cafeteria and a nearby bookstore. We bought some rosaries which we had them blessed (iwhere i will be using one of the rosaries we bought by the time i enrolled into SJA), and ate some snacks. It's also good to saee some fellow kababayans since it's a rarity to see one.

i can't really recall on what happend to us during our visit to the Cathloic University of America. The reason for that i guess is that during that time, the weather is pretty much gloomy so i was felling with the weather.

I. Ikaanim na Baitang

5.Pagkakataong nakilahok sa isang Stage Performance-1.The Creation, 2. Mga Sayaw nung 1960's hanggang sa New Millenium
6.First SJA Field Trip-1.second to the last batch kami na pumunta sa Corregidor.

SJA Fun Run 07 and Mini-Fair 07 (aka SJA Carousel 2007)

UP by way of EDSA den Quezon Circle then into the UP Diliman Campus.

ABANGAN!

Reality and Dreams Panay Jamerz

Feeling blue (not recommended to be read by Facebook users)

but watching him using it makes me feel uncomfortable. it's as if i desrve something better like him deserving to own that thing which is very expensive.

haay............................................................buhay...

J-University Adventures: Alis-Balik sa UE Caloocan

The University of teh East is probably the nearest respected educational instituition from my place in terms of distance. it's only worth 2 short jeepney rides, Polo-Sangandaan and Malabon-Monumento via Sangandaan.

I wnet there when i heard that UE is now conducting entrance tests from january up until this summer. i tok the opportunity quickly especially that it is our winter break (that was early January of this year).

I already have an exisiting application form from UE, i have the necessary documents needed upon taking my test and i have inquired with the schedule of the tests with he UE admissions office.

when stopped into one of their gates, i walkked a few blocks back towards University Hills Subdivison which lies next to the main entrance of the University. UE's location is not really a good one, considering it is near the PNR railroad tracks with squatter colonies existing from left and right (except on the tracks north of Samson since they were cleared away).

In fronty were several establishments, from internet cafes, to notary publics, to plain carinderias.

Just when i went in, the guard stopped me and interrogated me irst, demanding my purpose inside. i told him what i need and he let me in. sure, he let me inside the campus but hwere in the heck should i find the admissions office. now right next in the UE chapel is UE parking lot where i saw many students flocking into their cars, driven by themselves (oooh sosyal ha?).

Okay now there's this walkway which i took and just ingore passing students who are looking at me. then of course i need to go somewhere so i saw two students individually and asked them where i can find the admissions, they told me to go right from the walkway and left again and there you have it!

okay, I'm now at admissions, i went to the lady at front and said to her "hi, i would like to take an entrance test please?". sort of like in a fastfood resto. she ask for the requirements needed and so i gave it to her. not long after that, she ask me and two other guys to follow her so we could embark on a short tour around the university. As the young enthusiastic documentarist, i luckily brought along with me my wonderful digicam with its video-imaging recording skills to take shots around the campus for my ongoing movie project.

one of the new buildings was the Tan yabn Kee building which replaced one of UE's old buildings and now house several UE colleges with Fine Arts at the fifth floor.

I took the exam at one of its builfding with the two other guys, it was like an aptitude test so i found it easy. not long after that, the results are out with the help of its answer-reading machine, and the result of my test.....*drum roll please*..............I PASSED!

i got the necessary grade from the test but since i'm applying for Fine Arts, i'm required to take a talent test at the Tan Yan Kee Bldg at past noon. It was around 11 in the moring so i asked if i can take the test later that day. "OK" they sid but i have to w8 til noon and bring with me some necessary materials needed. so i went out the campus to buy cartolina and when i brought one back, i forgot to xerox one of my documents so i went out again, i looked for place where i could photocopy my documents. so okey, i had them all in all so since it is still early, i had lunch at the Jolibee branch in Sangandaan, i went back and was directed to go to the Tan Yan Kee bldg. thye trail there is long so i get to sight see he whole campus, it is very wide, enough for the UE to have its own soccer team.

The dean's office was closed so i have to wait for an hour for them to open again so i hang out at the building's stairs. it wasn't really a good idea since i've encountered passing FA students walking and climbing the stairs so i just have to blend in even if i dont even wear their uniforms. i ahd my CD player with me and so for an hour, i listened to all 10 tracks of this CD.

later the dean's office was open, took up their talent test and it was to sketch this object presented to me. whne i was done with that, they told me it'll be sent to the dean of fine arts and it will be his decision if i pass the test altogether.

a few months later (around march really), i got a letter from Ue and it says there thatniw as accpeted,. it also sopwedmy grade in my super easy entrance test that i took and later it read there that i can now apply to UE Caloocan this April.

Unfortunately, i didn't since I have alreayd reserved my slot in the College of Saint Benilde.

UE Caloocan's potnetial loss is DLS-CSB's latest gain.

but i'll never forget UE since it has for a day a part of my life.

caras similares y no similares.

No somos bastante viejos

The local election campaign fever has already begun. as early as last March 30, i have already seen campaign posters being posted (duh! that's why they're posters) with faces of similar and not similar faces. Incumbent mayor Sherwin Gatchalian is running for his 2nd term and his he is up against Valenzuela City 1st District Rep. Bobbit Carlos, MD who is now running for his last term as mayor. During Bobbit's term as mayor, i didn't exactly know how he improved the city except raising its status back in 1998 from a municipality into a chartered city and his ambitious Clean and Green project where there are garbage trucks singing the Macarena song with lyrics re-arranged from "Macarena, Macarena, macarena" into "Basurero, Basurero, Basurero". How weird and awful was that! Now when Sherwin aka Win Gatchalian took office, this 30 something business fellow had something in mind. i call him the Tarpaulin mayor since he has in his first term put up lots of tarpaulin hanging in lamppost, electric post, and anywhere in the public eye to promote city government projects, fenced ones, and accomplishments. i remember last year, there was a play about the life of one of our city's most revered hero and foremost namesake, Dr. Pio Valenzuela. There was a tarpaulin poster promoting the play with Mayor Win in it, wearing a barong tagalog and sitting in an old traditional chair.

what's famous about Sherwin is that he has this signature poster boy pose in most of his tarpaulins and in his campaign posters. what's funny about it that he's been using that same photo of him posing like that since his congressional days before assuming office in 2004.

looks like someone else is set to follow his path. Rep. and brother of Sherwin, REX Gatchalian is seeking his 2nd term in office. he might now be bumping against returning reelectionist Magtanggol Gunigundo (if my facts are right). It's not that he's following his brother as running for a political post, it's just that he is also known for having a signature pose in most of his campaign posters, even on his Serbisyo Centers (one is located in MacArthur Highway in Malinta). His face is like an evil kontravida (is there a good one?) facing straight at the camera with a mean looking face smiling. Another Gatchalian is running for office for the 1st time, and that's WES Gatchalian. He also has this signature pose like the first 2 although i don't know much about his gimmickry since he's running for the position of 2nd district representative from which Arkong Bato is not a Part of.

Here's what's really funny, each of the three brothers have three-lettered nicknames: WIN, REX, and WES. Now the Gatchalians use their nicknames as acronyms on their platforms and campaign whatevers. i don't care what their nicknames stand for but i feel i want to share it with you.

other running for local posts here in Valenzuela is this former PBA player whose last name is Esplana. He used to be a teammate of Sen. Robert Jaworski during the height of the PBA's popularity. he's campaign message is "ONE TEAM TAYO!".

on the part of Malabon, the Aquino-Oretas are now forming a political dynasty. Tito Oreta is running for reelection so he can seek a 2nd term as maypor, Lenlen Oreta, Tito's brother, is running as Vice Mayor. Lenlen's wife, Tessie Aquino-Oreta is running for reelection as Senator as well as his brother, Noynoy Aquino. The brothers Sandoval seems to be forming one too, as the incumbent MaNa rep, Federico "Ricky" Sandoval" is, if i'm not mistaken giving his support for his brother Alvin Sandoval who is running for a political post (was he a councilor since he was like, in billboards as early as January even before the campaign period?). If Ricky's wife is running, I'm guessing she might wanna recycle her old posters of her posing like SHan Cai slash Regine Velasquez with f4 as a background last election and her dream of turning Malabon into a Market City.

The Vicencios is not keen on giving up either. They are also vying to regain power one step at a time. Former Malabon mayor Amado Vicencio's son, incumbent mayor Arnold Vicencio, is seeking reelection.

I have no idea if Jayjay Yambao who, with Amado Vicencio and Tito Oreta, was featured in a drama series called "A Tale of Three Mayors (The Suspended Mayor, The Substitute Mayor, And The Mayor-Elect)", if he wanna run again as mayor. Since he was defeated, he had this TV show on the government-sequestered station, IBC-13. If ever he's running again, he might give out again comic books depicting his life and he's "divine calling to serve the people through governance". How weird is that!?

well, that's Philippine politics to you. We're not old enough to vote but as early as now, i can really tell which is the more deserving and the more deserve-nots!

Bye now!

Energy Saving Tips This Summer To Cool Off the Heat

1. Instead of using a fridge, place all of your soda cans outside in your balcony if you have one at dusk and have them stayed there the whole night. In the end, you can have ice-cold sodas right at youy balcony. The best months to place them there is from the months of September to early June at the Western adn Northern Hemisphere. Plus, you place of residence must have a temperate climate.

2. Do all your heavy household chores in the morning as early as six and then do the light ones for the rest of the day. After all that, take a really cold shower to take all that stress off your workload. Once you are squeeky clean, take a afternoon nap, turn the electrixc fan as high as 3 and make your well-deserve siesta for the rest of daytime hours. Estimated time for you to wake up is 6 pm. just be careful not to take you naps seriously as it may hinder you sleep cycle at night. You don't have to use an aircon since you'll be using an energy saving e-fan. but if your npot satisfied at having an e-fan, use the tradition abaniko to suit you satisfaction.

3. Don't watch TV nor use the family PC 5he whole day, it emits heat and adds the humidity of the room especially at the day's most humid time. LImit your usage and make the afternoon you siesta time.

4. If you wanna go to the great outdoors, walk you way there instead of using any forms of tranportation, especially if the nearest resort is just right next door. but if you wanna go 65 miles away from your house, take passage on someone else's vehicle to get you there to save money.

5. Instead of watching TV or using a PC, why not isten to a radio. For FM, i recomend the following: RJ 100.3 (The latest and greatest), 106.3 WRock, WRR 101.9 For Life!, Manila's Comfortable Choice 106.7 Dream FM, Magic 89.9, Wave 88.9,  and iFM. for AM: DZMM 630, DWWW 774, DZRH, etc.

Paglalaba, atbp.

As of this writing, i'm waiting for my first batch of dirty laundry to be dryed gy our washing machine and have them hang (sampay) by my bunso. After that, ill thake my next batch to have it washed then later my last batch plus the handwashables still in my room.

I can't get the picture why some of my friends seems astonished whenever i say that i can do laundry (e.g. "Marunong akong maglaba ng mga deputi, dekolor, atskaa magwalis...". Add to their atonishent that i can actually do household chores.

surprising really but it seems that, if my theory is right, these guys don't know how to do household chores (gawaing bahay) and must be living a life of luxury, and that their household needs are met by their household helper aka the maid or katulong or alalay, or tsimay.

Katulong is the Tagalog word for helper while alalay is for assistant. there are no clear differences among the two except that katulong  sonds more inferior and negative espeically if we pinpouint it to maids.

These guys really don't seem to care if their own classroom are clean. take this example from one time when i was still in high school (NAKS!). I was the only one sweeping the floors, wiping the dirt of the whiteboards, taking chalk off the eraser, organizing chairs and it seems no one in my monitorial groups don't seem to care cleaningnthe house. they just let their friends inside the classroom, chat and making messes out from eating candy, chips, and the like.

surely, they dont even know how to fold clothes, hahahahaha. oph well, karma will get after them sooner or later.

ok, got to go now, my laundry seems finsihed. better hang them up at our rooftop

My Thesis, Forever It Will No Longer Handed Back To Me

Last March 30th, it was the final final day of school. It was treated in two ways by two groups of students respecitvely: 1) it is celbrated as a temporary freedom given to undergrads so that they will have the grand time of their lives not obliged to follow the directives of the school for only at least two months, and 2) the day that the graduates will final end their more than 4 years to more than a decade facing the harsh realities of the socio-political utopia that is Saint James Academy.

Well, it was also the day where we can get our grad pics, with our final report card ( i never get to read it whole since i gave it to the Admissions of CSB a day later), and the well-sought after alumni cards (plus my unexpected Conduct Award), and of course my most awaited items, my thesis and my final copy of the VOX: the voice with a sense of vision and mission.

ever since my sister brought home the first vox copy when she was still a student there 8 years ago (that time I was still studying at SMMC in valenzuela), i have long dreamt of becoming one of the elite squad of staffwriters and cartoonists and editors that many Jamers had long admired. Although i failed  to become one for out of the 2 times i tried out, it was a privilege for me to become a contributing writer for them. I wrote this article about my experience in my first TKD tourney but one of the editors failed to have it on print so she promised me that it will be read by the public eyes of the student body on its year-ender issue.

three months later, after the waiting and the praying, i finally got to see my article printed on the 3 to the last page of the last VOX issue of the year. Before i got a copy, Shielo shared to me (as Filipino-language editor and all), my work was worth one whole page! wow! I'm worth a page, that's so awesome! yup, that was but that is not all! Miss Flores told me she was impressed with my work that she gave me a cmplimentary copy for my parents and another one for my sister! wow, how cool was that?

Speaking of Miss Flores, i was looking for her so that i can ask her if i can have my thesis back. Angelito had already hold back the release of our theses a couple of times or so and there no next tiome for that. she told me to wait, and when the time came, i went inside the RDC, ask her if i can get it. She asked me what was the clor code of my section, i said pink but i told her that mine was "Blue". Miss Joan was like "Oh! Jaime" and i was like "okay, I'll look for it".

evenetually, i remembered it was not blue but, of course the most obvious color of all, GREEN! i was surpirsed to see that the grade that Miss Flores gave to me was *drumroll*......................................................................................................................................................................

90%
90%
90%
90%
90%

Yahoo!

I was surprise so I was like "Oh, What the How!? A NINETY?!".
i was reayd to take it away but Miss Joan stopped and toldf me that since it got a ninety, it will included in the leauge of past theses that will be displayed in the library. WOW, what a great honor for me. After all the sleepless nihts and the sleepless nights that my mom took to help me edit my works, luck finally rained down on me.

My thesis is now the third one made by a Habitan to receice a 90+ grade and wasnever returned to its owner. i just hope that my bunso will do the same to his thesis 2 years after.

haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

I LOVE YOU THESIS!!!!!!!!!

Sibucao

ok, now it is confirmed: the first of may will be the day that the whole Sibucao clan (if not all) will go to their ancestral domain in Ilocos Norte. It will be the second time that I went there since the summer of 2005.

Surely, we will all be staying in Curemao just miles away from the Sibucao homeland of Batac.

However, the week following May 1 will also be the week of the enrollment period for freshman applicants in Benilde. May 2 is the specified date of enrollment for those taking Multimedia Arts. However, if ever the trip will go on, i have no chioice but to enroll on the last day of enrollment with the other freshmen from other courses.

hope it will push through!!!
